ROTARY HELPING ROTARY AFTER DISASTER

SUPPORT ROTARY CLUBS DEVASTATED BY DISASTERS

WHY?

After the initial disaster, Rotary International and the international community are quick to mobilize emergency aid and relief to support victims in need.  However, we sometimes forget that for those communities that were devastated by disaster, their hardships will extend far beyond the initial event.  Disasters sever a community's foundation, disrupting life well after the news cameras leave.

When disasters strike, recovery takes months, years, and even decades.  At the tip of a community's recovery efforts is the local Rotary Club who has taken on the responsibility to rebuild their community to a condition that is better before the disaster.
Disaster facts
  • The number of disasters around the globe and their costs are rising, exponentially.
  • Disasters are often times an exacerbation of pre-existing conditions. Pre-event conditions have a direct correlation on the severity of the impacts.
  •
  • It often takes years for a community to resume to normalcy and decades, if ever, to return to pre-disaster conditions.
Community Recovery
  • Community recovery is a long, arduous, and complex process.
  • Community recovery starts at the local level
  • Recovery is driven by influential community leaders, organizations, and government.
  • Successful recovery must address the long-term needs of at-risk groups and communities (note: this often contradicts typical community recovery agendas).
  • Recovery  provides an opportunity to improve community conditions, reduce the  vulnerability, and mitigate for future disasters.
